Who We Are

Dominican Renewables // National Context

Dominican Renewables is a leader in the national effort to confront the long-standing energy problems gripping countries like the Dominican Republic and Haiti through the promotion of local renewable energy sources that will allow for the substitution of imported oil. At present, there are no known sources of commercial quantity fossil fuels in the Dominican Republic. The country (as well as Haiti and many other countries in the region) imports most, if not all, of its energy needs, draining public resources and increasing its strategic and economic vulnerability. Access to locally-sourced renewable energy is thus a primary goal for the current government, which recognizes that substitution of imported fossil fuels with a clean renewable energy source like biofuels can have a positive economic and social impact. The Dominican government recently approved a law for the promotion of renewable fuels, driven by the dual objectives of decreasing the country’s balance of payment deficit and engendering rural and agro-industrial economic growth through promotion of vegetable oil-sourced biofuel projects. Biodiesel is a diesel replacement fuel that is manufactured from vegetable oils, recycled cooking grease or oils, or animal fats.
